Caring for the elderly in Peru

Dancing at the nursing home.

By Kiah Ford

Today we spent the morning at Asilo de Ancianos, a nursing home for the elderly who have been abandoned by their families. We divided into two main groups, one assisting the men and the other, the women. Although not all of us speak Spanish, we were still able to connect with them. Some of us danced with them while others assisted them with eating lunch. The simple act of sitting beside them and offering a smile made all the difference in the world. After we spent a few hours at Asilo de Ancianos, we took a short drive to Plaza de Armas where we were given free time to grab some lunch and explore before sharing a group dinner cooked by Lisa and Weihua back at CerviCusco.
